Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in power within the city.
Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.
The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced
The latest chapter concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the main group to begin their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table includes Teor (played by Travis), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
With a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.
Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Strategists, and Seekers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
Per the DM, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.
At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the developments of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
First, the team understands precisely where to proceed after a violent opening clash with the enemy group.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing initiated the narrative’s action—used the foes for his own means, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.
The traitor then paid off his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, north of the city, with Cyd close behind.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:
- Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks revenge.
- Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty place.
- The strong character and The cleric, having defied his house’s orders to execute the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- Yet, their status as key figures in the powerful family could help the group reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, Teor pledged a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- The agile adventurer and The hero are notorious outlaws.
- The strong figure and The cleric defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are allied with.
- Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.
This means them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in search of the traitor.
Upcoming Developments
From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we discover that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Explorers and Planners parties.
Audiences can expect finding out which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on next week.
